James J. Johnson was born in Warrenton, Virginia, but raised in Front Royal, Virginia. He is the son of James and Paula Johnson. He has a sister, Tabitha, and a younger brother, Terrence, who is an award-winning jazz/rock/soul percussionist. Johnson got involved in theatre during the eleventh grade.
