An engine driver pulls the emergency brake- too late : the young man on the tracks, the student Claus Wagner ( Till Topf ) is dead. Commissioner Löschner investigates in his surroundings and interrogates Claus' parents, schoolmates and his girlfriend Inge ( Ute Christensen ) . What had driven the student to his act of desperation ?Within self-contained flashbacks, Claus' tragical story is told from different points of view. Just as in a kaleidoscope, seemingly equal fragments appear in six epsiodes in always new, surprising cohesions.
