With »Der Rosenkavalier«, first performed in 1911, Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal succeeded in creating unique moments in the history of opera: from the monologues of the Marschallin to the presentation of the roses and the sublime final trio. The atmosphere of an invented Vienna set in Maria Theresia’s time was less intended to invite sentimental retrospection than to allow a glimpse into the kaleidoscope of human, even broken, worlds of feeling. In Vienna, »Rosenkavalier« is one of the central items of the repertoire, to which the great interpreters on the conductor's podium have continuously devoted themselves. This is clearly seen, for example, in the current production, which premiered in 1968 under Leonard Bernstein. Philippe Jordan, who has a high affinity to the Strauss repertoire, has already conducted a new staging of »Rosenkavalier« at the Vienna State Opera and has conducted the opera in Milan, Berlin and Paris. As the musical director of the Vienna State Opera, he will now musically stage the work once again and conduct it in two series with an exquisite cast of singers.
