What’s the connection between a theater director and a museum, a teacher and a laborer, a co-op and dozens of creative workshops? Something very concrete --a space-- as well as something absolutely intangible --a project. In one word: IMPA.For nearly two decades IMPA has been occupied, it’s a ‘fabrica recuperada’, self-managed by a worker collective. In the mid 1950s, up to 3.000 workers were employed in that specific plant. At the time of the occupation, in 1998, there were over a hundred workers, now less than 50 are left. From the very beginning, the idea was to share the countless spaces left empty by the factory with the surrounding area and its community, the neighborhood of Almagro. In a short time, IMPA became a social, cultural and educational engine for the entire city of Buenos Aires. Based on voluntary participation, IMPA thrives thanks to cooperation and solidarity, creativity and unity. IMPA is a perfect representation of resistance and resilience.
