简介

The number of women in U.S. prisons has increased 800% due to drug sentencing laws in the past 40 years. The state of Ohio, battling industrial decline and an opioid epidemic, has one of the nation's largest populations of incarcerated women. Amanda, Lydia, and Tomika do their best to raise their children from an Ohio prison while serving sentences for drug-related convictions. They participate in Ohio's first reentry program held outside prison walls. There, they process the trauma that led to their addictions, learn valuable life and employment skills, and prepare for their pending release. Following the women over several years, this documentary offers an intimate depiction of recently released prisoners' challenges in finding employment, securing housing, and restoring their family relationships. The women quickly discover there's a long and arduous journey ahead. APART is a touching portrait of enduring motherhood and earned second chances. By offering a comprehensive examination of the social systems that led to the subjects' incarceration, it's a strong indictment of a prison system prioritizing punitive punishment over rehabilitation. — R.R.
