With particular focus on our largely immigrant ancestors who lived, worked, and died in western Pennsylvania's coal mining communities during the late 19th and early to mid 20th centuries, 'Out of the Ground', a documentary featuring music by Ken Bonfield, examines the beginnings of the region's coal industry and the struggles of the families as they fought oppression, bigotry, and unimaginable working conditions.
