The show follows a young single mother (Mary Stuart Masterson) raising two high school-age boys in Los Angeles while juggling multiple minimum-wage jobs. Masterson's character is stiffed on a paycheck and subsequently referred to a local nonprofit advocacy center for help in making her employer pay up. Intrigued by the agency's cases, she winds up with a job as a case worker for them. Rhea Perlman plays a lawyer who has recently signed to the agency. Hector Elizondo will play the agency's director.
