Professor Cornelius is forced in his lectures on history (Schiller's "Don Carlos" emerges again) to review in conscience the nationalistic political tract he wrote seven years before. The conflict is heightened through conversations with a student, Hergesell, who shows, as a "spirit of the new generation", more sense than his own children of the same age and prefers to to apply history's lessons to the present. At a student party thrown at the professor's own home, Cornelius's favorite fiveyear-old daughter, Lorchen, falls in love with Hergesell when he flirts and dances with her. It is Hergesell, not the professor, who must help her to bed this evening. Story moves slowly forward as a history lesson and portrait of 1923 through the spoken thoughts and dialogue of Profosser Cornelius with Hergesell. Historical footage includes the first newscreels of Hitler in September 1923 at a Nazi parade in Nuremberg, lensed by Deulig News by accident from the crowd scenes.
