Sjöström’s most commercially successful Swedish silent film will be seen in a newly restored tinted version presented by the Swedish Film Institute. It is a harrowing tale charting the decline of a healthy, secure man who loses everything and is driven to madness and misanthropy. Sjöström cre- ated beautiful images with impressive settings and costumes, framed by elaborate masks and vignettes.
