简介

MILCZENIE / SILENCE (1963), was based on the autobiographical novel of a blind writer named Jerzy Szczygiel. There was a strong existential dimension to this bleak story of the internal struggle between a boy who loses his sight and a priest. However, even in this film Kutz found a way to paint an interesting picture of a small town whose inhabitants are collectively convinced that the boy's accident was divine punishment. Set in 1945 Poland film shows the story of a boy accused unjustly of trying to blow up a priest with a bomb and who is blinded in an explosion. The priest knows the boy is innocent, but afraid he will lose his stature and hero-worship by revealing that fact. Boy eventually overcomes the torment and goes back to life; the situation, however, remains unresolved due to the silence of the priest. When a priest is blinded from a bomb explosion, a young boy is blamed for the accident. The priest remains silent even though he knows the boy to be innocent. The boy struggles to find work in a town that condemns him for the incident. The priest continues to live the lie because of his martyred status.
