Adam and Nomfundo are two sixteen-year-old teenagers from Cape Town. Twenty years after the end of racial segregation in South Africa, on their first weekend alone, the born-frees go to Adam's family's seaside cottage in the small conservative town of Witsand. The weekend starts with fun and freedom as they enjoy their independence and learn more about each other. Soon, however, the secrets hidden in the family home begin to seep into their relationship. While rehearsing a play about the Spanish genocide of the Aztecs, the young lovers are reminded of their own parents' involvement in a dark chapter of history. And when Adam finds a box in the family attic, the weekend becomes a dramatic engagement with pain, guilt and the past.
