'Rooftop Bear’ is based on a relative sense of deprivation brought on by living in a mega-city like Seoul. Seoul lacks a public system that supports decent student housing. Consequently, it is extremely difficult to find a private space as a student. It was a bitter, but rather a joke-like reality for me that the water tank—on the rooftop of the university’s building—was the only space I could grant myself independently, without my family’s support. Acknowledging my situation, I attempted to get away from the home where I was raised and confronted the task of living alone. The experiment is to liberate a life from harsh state. The work, ‘Rooftop Bear’, has been extensively executed for three months with hesitation and doubt.
